Funeral Prayers Held for Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in Katsina
KATSINA, Nigeria — Funeral prayers for retired Major General Rabe Abubakar took place on Saturday, just days after he died in captivity following his abduction by terrorists.
The information was first reported by journalist Bakatsine, who specializes in conflict and insecurity issues in Nigeria’s North-West region. His post on social media platform X indicated that Abubakar’s wife, who had been abducted alongside him, was released by their captors with his remains.
Family members, military officers, government officials, and local residents gathered to pay their respects to the retired officer.
In a statement from the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Major General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, confirmed Abubakar’s death and extended condolences to his family and colleagues. The DHQ described Abubakar as a distinguished soldier who held several key positions, including as spokesman for various military formations and Director of Defence Information.
The military highlighted Abubakar’s significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations and the professional development of the Nigerian Armed Forces throughout his career.
The DHQ refrained from public comment on Abubakar’s abduction while rescue efforts were underway. It stated that all available operational resources had been mobilized in the attempt to secure his release. The military also announced that security operations against terrorists and kidnappers have been intensified in response to a surge in abductions across the nation.
The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and security, vowing to hold accountable those responsible for terrorist activities.
