‘Gen Z no longer think for themselves’ – Ayra Starr’s mother blames social media

Nene Aderibigbe, the mother of Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, has expressed concern over the impact of social media on Generation Z. She argues that many young people are increasingly reliant on the opinions of others, neglecting their own critical thinking abilities.

Aderibigbe highlighted her worries regarding the younger generation’s heavy reliance on smartphones and their struggle to recognize their own talents. “Social media has just turned a lot of things upside down. They don’t have their own thinking anymore; it is only people’s thinking they use now,” she stated.

She also noted that while many individuals in Generation Z possess significant gifts, they often fail to acknowledge their potential due to social media’s influence.

To combat this issue, Aderibigbe advised young people to take regular breaks from their devices, suggesting they spend two to three hours away from screens to reflect and practice mindfulness. “Take your time, drop your phone down for two, three hours, do a mental note, put your head down, take a mental note or meditate,” she recommended.
