Goods worth millions of naira destroyed as fire razes Abuja building materials market
A fire early Wednesday morning at Eda Plaza, a building materials market in Jabi, Abuja, resulted in extensive damage to shops and goods estimated to be worth millions of naira. The plaza is located opposite Chida Hotel.
Footage shared by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) captured the chaotic scene as shop owners attempted to salvage their merchandise.
An eyewitness, who spoke to NTA on the condition of anonymity, reported that an alarm was raised around 3 a.m. when his brother-in-law, who operates two shops and a packing store within the plaza, received a distress call from a colleague.
Despite the severity of the fire, the eyewitness confirmed that there were no reported casualties.
“We were at home when we received the call that the plaza was on fire. We rushed down here and found that the situation was dire,” he said.
Upon arrival, the eyewitness noted that the fire had already spread significantly, leaving only one of his brother-in-law’s two shops standing.
“The damage is extensive. My brother-in-law lost one shop and his packing store, with an estimated value of more than N20 million in roofing materials. Some of those materials were delivered the night before the incident,” he added.
As of the time of this report, the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service had not yet made a statement regarding the incident.
