Gunmen Kill Traditional Ruler in Plateau State Ambush
BOKKOS, Nigeria – Gunmen suspected to be affiliated with Fulani militia ambushed and killed Saf Samuel Alaket, the traditional ruler of Gwande District, on Wednesday evening. The attack occurred as he was returning from a traditional council meeting at the headquarters.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants attacked Alaket’s vehicle around 7:30 p.m. near the boundary separating Sha District from the Daffo community, close to his hometown. The gunmen opened fire, leaving the district head with severe injuries. He was subsequently transported to a nearby medical facility, where he was pronounced dead.
Peter Gwande, a community leader and member of Alaket’s council, confirmed the attack and described the ruler’s death as a significant loss for both the Gwande community and the greater Bokkos Local Government Area. He expressed that the tragedy has plunged the Bokkos Traditional Council and local residents into mourning.
Christopher Luka, a youth leader in the Gwande community, remarked that the incident has heightened tensions in the area. However, he noted that security forces have since managed to stabilize the situation.
Attempts to reach State Police Public Relations Officer SP Alfred Alabo for further comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to phone calls or text messages.
