Heavy rainstorm, windstorm wreak havoc in Jigawa
Severe Weather Causes Damage in Jigawa State
DUTSE, Nigeria — A heavy downpour, accompanied by strong winds, has left widespread destruction across several communities in the Dutse metropolis and surrounding areas in Jigawa State.
Areas severely impacted include Gida Dubu, Takur Site, Mobile, Kudi, Dan Masara, Kwaimawa, and other parts of the state capital. Reports indicate that the intense rainfall and windstorm have resulted in significant damage, including destroyed fences, roofs blown off homes and shops, and downed electricity poles.
Additionally, power lines were compromised, and numerous trees were uprooted. The rainfall exacerbated issues with drainage channels and culverts, which residents noted were blocked by waste materials and plastic debris.
Local residents have highlighted a lack of annual maintenance on drainage systems as a contributing factor to the flooding. They have expressed concerns that without immediate action, the situation could worsen, potentially leading to severe flooding in the future.
Affected community members are calling on government officials and relevant authorities to provide urgent assistance and implement preventative measures to mitigate further risks during the ongoing rainy season.
