Nigerian Comedian Carter Efe Comments on Social Media Pressure in Relationships

LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigerian comedian and content creator Carter Efe has suggested that the pressures of social media may have influenced the recent decision by fellow creators Peller and Jarvis to get married.

During a recent interview, Efe characterized the couple’s relationship as insincere and explained why he was not invited to their wedding. “They see me as a witch; that’s why they didn’t invite me,” Efe stated, hinting at the dynamics of social media perceptions in personal relationships.

Efe discussed the broader implications of social media engagement, particularly for female content creators. He claimed that online comments and interactions can significantly sway their decisions in relationships. “I know how women in the content space behave. Instagram comments and engagement control women when they’re in a relationship,” he said.

He also expressed a personal aversion to dating another content creator or a public figure due to the scrutiny such relationships endure. Efe argued that continual online reactions can pressure couples into actions they might normally avoid. “To be honest, it’s pressure that makes some people do things they are not supposed to do because of the comments they see online,” he remarked.

Addressing the topic of marriage, Efe noted, “The internet is crazy. It’s pressure that pushes them to marry.” He further reflected on his own experiences with relationships intertwined with content creation, recalling times when he felt compelled to include his partner in his social media presence despite disagreements.

“There was a time I couldn’t create content if I didn’t see my woman,” Efe shared. He admitted that the pressure sometimes forced them to present a united front, even after conflicts. “Do you know how many times I would cry? We would fight before we even faced the camera,” he recounted.

Acknowledging the emotional toll, Efe stated he eventually recognized the need to separate his personal life from online expectations. “I have to use my own brain. I said no. It cannot continue like this,” he emphasized.

He warned others about the risks of becoming too immersed in the demands of the internet. “If you don’t understand the internet, it will put your head in a spin, and you will start regretting years later that these people don’t really care about you,” Efe concluded.
