French Court Ruling Enables Marine Le Pen’s Presidential Bid
A French court has ruled that Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally, is eligible to run for president in April 2027. The court reduced and suspended her prison sentence and the ban on seeking public office, while affirming her conviction connected to a European Parliament jobs scandal.
As part of the ruling, Le Pen will be required to wear an electronic monitor and remain under house arrest for one year. She has expressed concerns that this condition will impede her ability to campaign and has indicated plans to appeal the decision to France’s highest court. Despite these challenges, Le Pen continues to lead in opinion polls.
The implications of her candidacy raise questions about her potential trajectory toward the presidency, as well as the possibility of a united voter front against her nationalist and anti-immigrant policies, similar to past elections.
