Jungle justice: Mob kills two suspected robbers in Calabar
CALABAR, Cross River State — Two men suspected of robbery were reportedly lynched by a mob on Sunday morning in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State.
Local police officials indicated that the identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed. They urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, cautioning against acts of vigilante justice.
The incident took place on Ekpo Abasi Road, near Yellow Duke Street in the Calabar South local government area. According to reports, the men may have been attacked while attempting to steal mobile phones from residents, an area known for frequent petty and armed robbery.
ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, a police spokesperson, stated that initial information suggests the suspects were apprehended by locals before the mob attack occurred. Police personnel have visited the scene and are documenting the details of the incident.
“We have commenced preliminary investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and identify the deceased,” Akata said.
He noted that the remains were recovered from the scene with the cooperation of local government authorities for proper preservation.
The police reiterated their stance against jungle justice, urging citizens to report suspected criminals to law enforcement for appropriate investigation and prosecution. They emphasized that individuals do not have the legal authority to administer punishments.
