Kano govt distributes 150 truckloads of fertiliser to farmers across 44 LGAs
Governor Launches Distribution of Subsidized Fertilizer in Kano State
KANO, Nigeria (AP) — Governor Kabir Yusuf has initiated the distribution of 90,000 bags of subsidized fertilizer to farmers throughout Kano State, emphasizing the initiative’s role in promoting food security.
The fertilizer, transported in 150 trucks, will be allocated across the state’s 44 local government areas and 484 political wards in advance of the 2026 wet farming season.
During the launch of the distribution program, Yusuf highlighted agriculture as a critical component of his administration’s development agenda. Over the past three years, he noted, the government has implemented various programs aimed at revitalizing the agricultural sector. These programs include providing quality farm inputs, enhancing crop production techniques, and introducing pest control measures designed to improve farmers’ productivity.
Yusuf explained that the ongoing supply of subsidized agricultural inputs has led to increased crop yields, lower food prices, job creation in rural areas, and enhanced food security across the state.
Each local government area is set to receive an average of three truckloads of fertilizer, with allocations ensuring that 70 beneficiaries per ward have access to the necessary resources. While a bag of fertilizer sells for approximately N50,000 on the open market, farmers will benefit from a 50% subsidy, allowing them to purchase each bag at N25,000.
He described the initiative as a collaborative effort between the state and local governments aimed at mitigating the financial burden on farmers during the planting season.
To ensure transparency and fairness in the distribution process, the governor established a state fertilizer distribution committee led by the Commissioner for Agriculture. Similar committees have been set up in all 44 local government areas.
Additionally, Yusuf praised the commitment of security agencies in the state for their ongoing efforts to maintain peace and support government initiatives.
