NANS Convention: Osun Poly student dies after stabbing in Osogbo
A student at Osun State Polytechnic, Ademiju Ayeni, has died following an incident in which he was allegedly stabbed during the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee convention in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.
The stabbing occurred on Saturday at the Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre, where the convention was held.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the death, noting that Ayeni suffered a stab wound to the chest after a disagreement during the event. Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abiodun Ojelabi stated that the dispute had been resolved prior to the dispersal of participants.
“There was a little disagreement during the convention, and it was settled,” Ojelabi said. “After they dispersed, the deceased complained of chest pain, and when it was checked, he had a stab wound on his chest.”
Ayeni was transported to a local hospital in Osogbo, where he was pronounced dead. Ojelabi indicated that his body has been deposited for autopsy.
The police have acknowledged awareness of the incident but did not confirm whether any suspects have been arrested relating to Ayeni’s death.
Meanwhile, Josiah Adeyemo, the NANS South-West Coordinator, suggested that the incident may be related to cult activity, claiming the alleged assailant has not yet been identified. “According to reports reaching me, it was cult-related. They fought for a few minutes, and then he was stabbed,” Adeyemo stated.
He noted that the proceedings of the convention had initially occurred without incident. “It is quite unfortunate because the proceedings went peacefully. Hence, I don’t know what could have caused the fight outside the gate,” he remarked.
Sources who attended the convention indicated that Ayeni was allegedly stabbed by a member of the program’s security committee while trying to access the venue. The incident was reported to the Dada Estate Police Station, and Ayeni’s remains were taken to the morgue at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital pending further investigation.
