NANS Calls for Dialogue Amid ASUU Strike Threat at Kebbi University
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged for dialogue to prevent a potential strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero (AFUSTA) in Kebbi State.
This appeal comes after ASUU-AFUSTA issued a two-week ultimatum over unresolved welfare issues affecting its members. If these concerns are not addressed by the deadline, the union has threatened strike action.
In a statement released by NANS National Vice President for External Affairs, Sadiq Zango, the organization called on the Kebbi State Government, university management, and the union to engage in discussions to resolve the dispute and maintain academic continuity.
NANS recognized the lecturers’ grievances, which include overdue remuneration, earned academic allowances, promotion exercises, annual salary increments, salary adjustments, and other outstanding entitlements.
The student body has initiated consultations with ASUU-AFUSTA leadership, university officials, and relevant state government representatives to aid in reaching a resolution.
NANS emphasized the importance of exhausting all avenues for negotiation, asserting that ongoing communication and adherence to agreements are crucial for maintaining industrial peace within universities.
It warned that any strike could significantly disrupt lectures, examinations, research activities, graduation timelines, and other academic programs, adversely impacting students and the institution.
NANS expressed its commitment to supporting the resolution efforts and remains hopeful that the issues will be settled through dialogue, prioritizing the interests of students and the future of higher education in Kebbi State.
