Niger: ‘I won’t probe ex-governor Bello, I have all their files’ – Bago

Niger State Governor Declines to Investigate Predecessor Amid Political Tensions

NIGER STATE, Nigeria — Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago announced on Thursday that he would not pursue an investigation into alleged misconduct by former Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, despite having documents that he claims detail questionable activities during Bello’s administration.

During a visit to the Emir’s Palace in Kagara, following a communal clash that resulted in over 40 fatalities, Bago expressed his commitment to peace over political confrontation. He stated that while he possesses evidence of alleged “shady activities,” he is determined not to engage in conflict with his predecessor.

“I have all their files. I know exactly what they did during their time in office. Every shady activity and dirty deal is documented,” Bago said.

The governor indicated that he has faced pressure to take action against Bello but prefers to focus on fostering peace in Niger State.

Bago’s comments come against a backdrop of political strife in the state, particularly following the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries, which have led to several defections among former political appointees from Bello’s government. Notably, Maikil Al-Amin Bmitosahi, former Chief of Staff to Bello, recently led members of the Niger Rescue Movement into the African Democratic Congress, criticizing the current administration’s governance and pledging to help the state.

In response, Bago accused defectors of acting out of self-interest and reassured supporters that attempts to destabilize his administration would not succeed. “Some of you left the party purely for selfish interests, but you will not succeed in destabilizing this administration. I am the only governor who has chosen to accommodate everybody,” he stated.

Bago further argued that his government is unique in its ability to unite political factions that were previously at odds. He emphasized a commitment to inclusion, contrasting his leadership with that of past administrations.

“I have carried everyone along in the spirit of unity, yet a few remain ungrateful,” Bago added.

The governor denied any interference in the senatorial primary involving Bello, clarifying that his primary aim is maintaining peace in the state. He reiterated, “I did not even interfere in the senatorial primaries involving Abu Sani. All I desire is lasting peace for Niger State.”

Bago warned that his administration would not tolerate efforts to create instability within the ruling party or undermine his government. He also cautioned social media users against disseminating what he termed fake news and malicious propaganda, revealing that he has instructed the Department of State Services to investigate the matter.

“Enough is enough. We will not allow rumor-mongers and enemies of progress to undermine the peace and development of Niger State,” Bago asserted.
