Minister Warns Against Tampering with Evidence in Niger State Miners’ Death Case
Abuja, Nigeria — Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo issued a stern warning on Tuesday to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other stakeholders against interfering with material evidence related to the deaths of 37 miners in Niger State.
During the inauguration of an investigative committee in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo stated that any individual or officer found guilty of tampering with evidence will face legal consequences.
The incident, which involved the deaths of the miners while in NSCDC custody, occurred following enforcement actions in the vicinity of Lt. Gen. Mohammed Inuwa Wushishi Estate in Minna, Niger State.
In response to the tragic event, the federal government established a 10-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the miners’ deaths. The minister emphasized the importance of cooperation from the NSCDC and insisted that all reports and evidence related to the case must be preserved and made accessible to the committee.
“I urge NSCDC and all other stakeholders to adhere to this directive,” Tunji-Ojo said. “Any attempt to destroy or conceal evidence, intimidate witnesses, or obstruct this investigation will be considered a serious offense against the nation.”
He assured the public that no individual, regardless of position, would be shielded if found culpable. Tunji-Ojo also extended condolences to the families of the deceased, asking for their patience and assuring them that the government remains committed to uncovering the truth.
