Nigerian Army and Benin National Guard Conduct Joint Night Patrol in Cotonou

COTONOU, Republic of Benin — Troops from the Nigerian Army collaborated with personnel from the Benin National Guard to conduct a joint night patrol in Cotonou, aimed at enhancing security in border communities.

The operation, which took place from 12:05 a.m. to 2:12 a.m. on June 8, was reported by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region. He noted that the patrol falls under the framework of Operation AWATSE/Operation A II and is part of ongoing efforts to bolster cross-border security cooperation and combat transnational crimes.

The patrol covered designated routes and key locations throughout Cotonou. Its objectives included deterring criminal activity and reinforcing operational collaboration between the security forces of both nations.

Makama reported that the operation was carried out without incident and that no unusual occurrences were recorded. He emphasized that the joint patrol provided a visible security presence across the city, improving coordination, information sharing, and interoperability among the participating forces.

“This operation is part of broader bilateral security initiatives aimed at addressing trans-border crimes, strengthening border management, and promoting stability within the West African sub-region,” he said.

According to Makama, regular joint patrols and collaborative operations are essential for addressing emerging security threats and ensuring the safety of communities along shared borders.
