Ogun NNPP guber candidate, Rotham withdraws suit against Yayi

NNPP Candidate Withdraws Suit in Favor of Ogun West Aspirations
By James Ogunnaike, Abeokuta
Akinbola Hammed Rotham, the governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the upcoming 2027 elections in Ogun State, has withdrawn a legal challenge regarding the eligibility of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, commonly referred to as Yayi. Rotham’s decision to retract Suit No. FHC/AB/CS/135/2026 was motivated by what he described as a commitment to the Ogun West agenda, which he believes transcends personal aspirations.
During a press conference in Abeokuta, Rotham emphasized that continuing with the suit would not align with the collective goal of the Ogun West Senatorial district, which has been striving for 50 years to produce a governor. “My decision to withdraw the suit was made strictly in the best interest of the Ogun West agenda and the future of Ogun State,” he stated.
Rotham characterized Yayi as a political ally and fellow contestant, underscoring that their rivalry should not detract from the unity essential for advancing the interests of the Ogun West region. “Both Senator Yayi and I are sons of Ogun West, and our shared aspiration to see the region produce a governor after decades is more significant than any individual ambition,” he added.
In his remarks, Rotham urged a shift away from divisive discussions regarding place of birth and indigeneship in political contests. He asserted, “Our democracy should evolve beyond unnecessary sentiments and controversies about an individual’s origin or what being indigenous entails. Development should focus on competence, character, accountability, and the capacity to provide effective governance.”
Reflecting on his decision to withdraw the legal action, Rotham indicated that he believes it serves the larger interests of Ogun West and contributes positively to democratic development. “Continuing the suit would not benefit the broader democratic culture; thus, I opted for peace and unity,” he remarked.
Rotham clarified that his withdrawal should not be seen as a renunciation of his political ambitions, reaffirming his commitment to run in the 2027 governor race. “This decision aligns with the philosophy of the NNPP. Other political parties are not adversaries but rather sister parties,” he explained.
He acknowledged the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the founding vision of the NNPP led by Dr. Boniface Aniebonam Okechukwu, recalling that Senator Yayi is part of President Tinubu’s political family. Rotham expressed his desire to avoid distractions that might detract from the collective interest of Ogun State.
Extending a gesture of camaraderie, he invited Yayi to engage in a constructive political competition, stating, “Let us respect one another and prioritize Ogun State.”
Rotham reasserted his dedication to competing effectively in the upcoming governorship race and advocated for a collective pursuit of progress for Ogun State. He expressed eagerness to engage with Yayi, viewing him as a “brother and fellow contestant,” and emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders committed to the region’s development.
