Former Prime Minister Imran Khan Transferred from Jail to Hospital Following Supreme Court Order
ISLAMABAD — Former Prime Minister Imran Khan was moved from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad on Thursday night, according to local media reports. The transfer was executed by police and security forces in compliance with a Supreme Court order.
Khan, the founder of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has been incarcerated since August 2023 after being convicted on multiple counts of corruption, charges he and his supporters claim are politically motivated.
Sources informed Geo News that preparations for the transfer were finalized earlier in the day, ahead of the court’s directive issued on Tuesday, which mandated that Khan be moved to the hospital within two days. The government had challenged this order but was unsuccessful.
PTI shared a live broadcast of the transfer preparations; however, neither the party nor the government has released an official statement on the matter.
Khan’s family and political allies have long expressed concerns regarding his health and have called for his medical needs to be addressed. Under the court order, Khan will be evaluated by a medical board that includes his personal physician.
Khan is scheduled to appear in court again on September 16. According to his lawyer, Uzair Bhandari, Khan is expected to remain hospitalized at least until that date. This will be the longest duration Khan has spent outside of a jail facility since his imprisonment.
Imran Khan was ousted as prime minister in April 2022 following a no-confidence vote in Parliament. His political career has taken multiple turns since then, culminating in his recent legal troubles and subsequent incarceration.
