Gaza City Prepares for Funeral of 105 Victims of October 2023 Air Strikes

Published on October 1, 2026

Gaza City residents are preparing to hold a funeral for 105 individuals who lost their lives in a series of Israeli airstrikes on October 25, 2023. The tragic event resulted in the destruction of the seven-story Al Taj 3 building and several nearby residential structures in the Yarmouk Square neighborhood.

Family members are set to carry coffins containing the remains of the deceased during a procession on Thursday, as stated by the General Directorate of Civil Defence. The bodies will be laid to rest in the Sheikh Radwan cemetery, located northwest of Gaza City.

The recovery operation was conducted in collaboration with an Egyptian committee, according to Gaza’s civil defense officials. Ibrahim Khalili, a correspondent with Al Jazeera who is reporting from Gaza City, noted that this recovery is the fifth largest since the escalation of hostilities began in October 2023, based on the number of bodies retrieved.

Abdul al-Majdalawi, the director of civil defense operations, spoke to the challenges faced during the recovery. He explained that it was “impossible” to access the bodies immediately following the airstrikes. “Bulldozers, excavators, and other heavy machinery used by civil defense teams in Gaza were directly and deliberately targeted,” al-Majdalawi said.

Osama Sharaf, who lost 37 family members in the attack, described the emotional toll of the recovery effort. “We recovered some of them at the beginning of the war, and today [Wednesday] 16 more were recovered, including my father, my mother, and all of my siblings. My sister’s son was also there with them,” Sharaf said.
