Police arraign seven suspects over Kano GSM market attack

Kano Police Update Investigation into April Thuggery Incident

KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Police Command has reported progress in its investigation into the thuggery incident that occurred at the Farm Centre GSM market on April 28, 2026.

In an official statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command revealed that two additional suspects have been arrested following a targeted intelligence operation. The suspects, identified as 18-year-old Sadiq Ayuba from Darmanawa Quarters and 38-year-old Abdulganiyu Abba from Mariri Quarters, are believed to be connected to the attack.

During questioning, Ayuba reportedly admitted that he and other individuals were recruited and compensated by a person identified as Mallam Hassan, who remains at large, to execute the attack on the market and the entourage of AA Zaura.

The statement indicated that the assault resulted in significant property damage, including the destruction of businesses and the impairment of a Toyota ambulance belonging to the entourage, as well as a tricycle owned by Shamsuddeen Sani.

With these recent arrests, the total number of suspects implicated in the case has reached seven. All were formally charged on May 13, 2026, before Magistrate Court Number 2 in Nomansland, Kano. The charges include criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, unlawful assembly, possession of dangerous weapons, and mischief.

Kano State Police Commissioner Ibrahim Adamu Bakori emphasized the command’s commitment to identifying and detaining all individuals involved in thuggery and public disturbances. He confirmed that efforts to apprehend principal suspect Mallam Hassan are ongoing.

Bakori praised the public for their contributions to the investigation and encouraged continued community support to enhance security in Kano. He reaffirmed the police’s dedication to enforcing laws and ensuring that those involved in violent acts are held accountable.
