Police arrest officer over public execution of Nigerian in Delta

Nigerian Police Officer Arrested in Shooting Incident

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman following the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

The incident took place on Sunday when police officials from the Effurun Area Command responded to reports at the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway. According to police reports, Ogidi had been detained by members of a transport union while allegedly attempting to send a parcel that contained a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

Authorities say that while efforts were being made to finalize Ogidi’s arrest, Usman discharged his firearm in a manner that contravened police regulations, resulting in the suspect’s death.

In a statement, the Nigeria Police Force announced the immediate transfer of Usman and his team to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they will be subject to proceedings by the Force Disciplinary Committee and face potential prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police expressed condolences to Ogidi’s family and assured them that justice will be pursued in accordance with the law. He also called on the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary and legal processes unfold.
