Police rescue officers mistaken for kidnappers in Ogun, warn against mob action

Ogun Police Clarify Viral Video of Alleged Kidnappers

The Ogun State Police Command clarified on Monday that a viral video depicting the arrest of suspected kidnappers in the Sagamu Local Government Area actually shows police officers who were misidentified. The two individuals in the video are members of the Police Mobile Force from Lagos State.

According to local reports, community members from the Kanuyi Community in Simawa apprehended the officers after they reportedly lost their way while returning from an official duty in Sagamu. Footage circulating on social media shows the officers sitting on the ground, surrounded by an agitated crowd.

Police Public Relations Officer DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi stated that upon receiving reports of the incident, operatives from the Simawa Division were promptly dispatched to the scene.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that the individuals were legitimate police officers. “They were rescued from the crowd and taken into protective custody for further identification and investigation,” Babaseyi said. He noted that the officers presented valid police identification, deployment documents, uniforms, and other service materials to verify their status.

Babaseyi also highlighted that their parent formation authenticated their positions within the Nigeria Police Force. Despite being photographed and recorded by residents before police intervention, the officers fortunately did not sustain physical harm, though the incident caused them unnecessary public suspicion and emotional distress.

Babaseyi praised community vigilance but urged the public to refrain from mob actions and allow law enforcement to confirm facts before disseminating information, which could potentially harm innocent individuals.

“This situation underscores the daily challenges faced by security personnel and the importance of cooperation between the public and law enforcement,” he added.

The Ogun State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, enhancing community policing, and building public trust through professionalism and accountability.
