Moscow Orders Closure of German Consulate in Response to Berlin’s Diplomatic Measures

Moscow has directed the closure of the German consulate in St. Petersburg, effective September 18, following a reciprocal action taken by Berlin last week amidst escalating tensions related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the closure on Monday, framing it as a response to Germany’s shuttering of two Russian diplomatic missions in response to what Berlin described as an attempted drone attack on Leipzig Airport.
In a statement released via Telegram, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Germany had “provoked a new round of escalation in bilateral relations” and holds “full responsibility for the consequences.” The directive requires all diplomats and staff from the St. Petersburg consulate to exit Russia by the specified date.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized Germany’s assertions regarding the drone incident, declaring that such accusations represent “the beginning of a real war.” The exchange reflects a significant decline in diplomatic relations between Russia and Germany, which have deteriorated sharply since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Germany has positioned itself as one of Ukraine’s staunchest allies in Europe, providing over $50 billion in civilian aid and nearly $67 billion in military support, according to its Foreign Ministry.
Continuing the downward spiral of relations, Germany’s recent accusations regarding the failed drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport prompted it to close Russia’s consulate general in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin. In retaliation, Moscow has ordered the closure of all branches of the Goethe-Institut in Russia, with staff members required to leave by Sunday.
Lavrov compared the closure of Russian diplomatic facilities in Germany to events that preceded World War II, labeling the actions as “absolutely unacceptable” and suggesting that Germany harbors aggressive intentions.
As the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv persists, these diplomatic disputes underscore the growing frustrations and hostilities between Russia and the West.
