Security Forces Initiate Rescue Operation Following Abduction in Benue State
Security operatives have commenced a rescue operation for one of three siblings abducted by gunmen in Benue State. The siblings were en route to their home community of Iklenyi in Okpokwu Local Government Area to bury their mother’s remains, which they had transported from Abuja.
The kidnappers released two of the siblings late Saturday night and left the corpse at the scene. However, one sibling remains in captivity.
The abduction occurred around 4 a.m. Saturday between Omutele and Ankpechi along the Ogobia-Otukpo Road in the Oglewu District of Ohimini Local Government Area.
A local resident, who identified himself as Elijah, stated, “The kidnappers released two siblings and dumped the corpse on Saturday night so they could bury their mother. But one of them is still being held.”
Gabriel Adole, the Chairman of Ohimini Local Government Area, confirmed the incident, noting that the mother’s remains have since been taken to Okpokwu for burial. He added that security personnel are conducting search operations in the surrounding forests for the remaining victim.
Adole reported that conventional police officers, soldiers, and various security agencies are actively involved in the rescue efforts.
In an update, DSP Udeme Edet, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, indicated that the command has not yet received an official report from the Divisional Police Officer in Ohimini regarding the incident.
