Senate Committee to Present Final Report on State Police Creation This Week

ABUJA — Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele announced Monday that the Senate Committee on Constitution Review will submit its final report regarding the proposed creation of state police for consideration and approval before the end of the week.

Bamidele, who serves as Vice Chairman of the committee, emphasized that this initiative is part of the National Assembly’s broader efforts to tackle the nation’s security challenges.

Once approved by the National Assembly, the proposal will be forwarded to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for ratification.

“We have concluded that we will advance the constitutional amendment concerning provisions for state police this week, eliminating further delays,” Bamidele stated during a press conference.

He noted that federal lawmakers have engaged in discussions over recent weeks with key stakeholders, including President Bola Tinubu, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, and Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, to develop a framework for state policing.
