South Africa xenophobic attacks: Nigeria Police urges calm as fear of retaliation heightens

Nigeria Police Address Allegations of Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa
The Nigeria Police Force has issued a statement regarding recent allegations of xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa. The announcement comes as concerns mount over possible retaliatory actions targeted at South African citizens and businesses within Nigeria.
In a statement signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon Placid, officials noted that a meeting of the Joint Intelligence Board on May 18, 2026, led by the National Security Adviser, prompted a comprehensive assessment by security and intelligence agencies. This evaluation aimed to understand the security implications and develop appropriate response strategies.
The police reassured the public, stating there is no reason for alarm. “The Federal Government is actively engaging with relevant authorities and stakeholders through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to peacefully resolve the situation and protect the interests of Nigerians both at home and abroad,” the statement read.
The police department urged citizens to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. “While it is natural to be concerned about the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, acts of retaliation, violence, intimidation, and hate speech will not be tolerated and are illegal,” the statement continued.
Nigeria emphasizes the importance of the rule of law, affirming that all individuals legally residing in the country, regardless of nationality, deserve legal protection. Any attacks on South African nationals or their properties will be treated as criminal offenses.
The police also called on the public to avoid the spread of unverified or inflammatory information, especially on social media. They warned that sharing false or provocative content could escalate tensions, disrupt public order, and hinder diplomatic efforts.
In response to the situation, the Nigeria Police Force, in coordination with other security and intelligence agencies, has heightened surveillance and activated security protocols around critical national assets.
