Senate President Defends Tinubu’s Extended Vacation
AKWA IBOM, Nigeria — Senate President Godswill Akpabio reaffirmed Tuesday that there is no leadership vacuum in Nigeria despite President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s extended working vacation abroad. His comments come in response to rising public concern following Tinubu’s three-week holiday, which has now been extended by an additional week.
Speaking at the commissioning of road projects executed by Governor Umo Eno, Akpabio addressed calls for Tinubu to transfer power to Vice President Kashim Shettima during his absence. He emphasized that the President is still in full control and fulfilling his constitutional duties.
“I am the Senate President, and I am not the acting President of Nigeria, because President Tinubu is still in power,” Akpabio said. “He is on a working leave, and there is no absence in Aso Rock. The world is a global village, and one can give instructions over the internet. So, why are people complaining?”
Akpabio asserted that only his office has the authority to declare a presidential vacancy and noted that such a situation does not exist at this time. “Right now, there is no vacancy. Asiwaju Tinubu is still in power, and he is still running the affairs of Nigeria,” he added.
To illustrate Tinubu’s continued engagement, Akpabio highlighted recent communications between the President and foreign leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron.
His statements appear to address concerns raised by critics who allege that the President’s absence may impede governance. By invoking modern communication technology, Akpabio argued that a “remote” presidency can still operate effectively.
As of now, the Presidency has not announced a formal return date for President Tinubu. Akpabio’s remarks indicate a unified stance within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) aimed at alleviating speculation surrounding a potential leadership crisis.
