There’s some truth to ‘school na scam’ – Actor Jim Iyke
Veteran Nollywood Actor Jim Iyke Reflects on Western Education’s Value
In a recent interview with media personality Joey Akan, veteran Nollywood actor Jim Iyke expressed his views on the contentious assertion that Western education is a “scam.” He suggested there is some merit to this claim, citing his own experience and the success of others who have bypassed formal educational paths.
Iyke contended that many individuals, including himself, are thriving financially and personally, often surpassing those who taught them. “I am doing better than all my lecturers,” he stated, recalling a chance encounter with a late professor on a flight, where both recognized the disparity in their successes.
He emphasized that practical knowledge gained from family and mentors often outweighs traditional academic learning. “The advice I received from my uncles and local traders taught me more than formal education ever could,” Iyke remarked. He credited life skills and strategic thinking instilled by his father for his accomplishments.
Moreover, Iyke highlighted that numerous successful individuals worldwide lack formal educational credentials. “How many of the wealthiest people have PhDs?” he asked. He also acknowledged that he employs a PhD holder, which, in his view, illustrates the complexities of education’s role in achieving success.
Iyke’s comments contribute to the ongoing discourse about the relevance and impact of formal education in today’s society.
