President Tinubu Nominates New Appointees to INEC
President Bola Tinubu has nominated four national commissioners and two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), filling vacancies created by the expiration of current tenures.
The nominations were detailed in a press release from the State House issued on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. The Senate is set to review the nominees, a necessary step before their confirmation.
Among the reappointments, Dr. Bala Bila has been designated to continue serving as the national commissioner representing the North-East geopolitical zone.
The new national commissioners include Professor Mustapha Aliu, who will take over from Professor Abdullahi Zuru as the North-West representative, and Bashir Muhammed Umar, who is slated to replace Professor Muhammad Adamu as the North-Central representative.
Additionally, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, currently the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, has been nominated to represent the South-West and will succeed Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure concludes on October 24.
To fill the positions of resident electoral commissioners, Tinubu has nominated retired permanent secretary Dr. Samuel Akinjide Akinleye to represent Ekiti State and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi from Jigawa State, replacing Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
The President has urged the Senate to move swiftly in the confirmation process, citing the upcoming general elections scheduled for January 2024. These nominations are part of INEC’s preparation for the 2027 general elections, aiming to enhance the commission’s leadership and electoral administration.
