Two killed as man allegedly under influence of drugs attacks security guards in Lagos
Two individuals have been reported dead following a violent incident at IMAX Cinemas in the Lekki area of Lagos State on Friday night. The disturbance began when a man, armed with a machete and a knife, allegedly attacked security personnel at the cinema.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as patrons and staff fled in panic after the suspect attempted to gain entry to the facility but was thwarted by security guards. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the man, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, became aggressive when denied access, subsequently attacking the guards on duty.
According to SP Adebisi Abimbola, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, the suspect fatally stabbed one security guard and injured another during the confrontation. The suspect, reportedly homeless, was later assaulted by a mob in the aftermath and succumbed to his injuries.
“Two people have been confirmed dead,” Adebisi stated, noting that police have launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the event. Investigators are working to identify the attacker and clarify the sequence of events that led to his demise.
In connection with the inquiry, the Chief Security Officer of the cinema has been taken into custody. The police are also seeking to obtain and review CCTV footage from the venue to better understand the incident and ascertain whether additional individuals played a role.
Adebisi emphasized that the investigation will encompass all relevant factors relating to the fatalities. The situation has raised renewed concerns regarding security protocols at entertainment venues, specifically the ability of personnel to detect and manage potential threats effectively.
As of the latest updates, authorities have yet to disclose the identities of the deceased or provide further details regarding the condition of the injured security officer.
