Wales’ First Minister Seeks New Powers in Relations with UK

Wales’ First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth is advocating for a revised agreement with the United Kingdom, citing a need to address what he describes as “historic unfairness” in the nation’s current relationship with the UK.

In a recent letter to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Iorwerth formally requested the devolution of additional powers to Wales. These powers would enable the Welsh government to take control over areas such as policing, the justice system, the rail network, and natural resources.

Since taking office in May, Iorwerth’s party, Plaid Cymru—a center-left Welsh nationalist party—has ended over a century of dominance by the Labour Party in Wales. Just four months into his term, he signed a coalition pact with the leaders of Scotland and Northern Ireland. This agreement emphasizes their rights to self-determination while cautioning that the era of central authority from the British Parliament may be nearing its conclusion.

Iorwerth clarified that his proposals are not aimed at dismantling the United Kingdom but rather at empowering the Welsh government to determine its own future. He noted that while Wales is on a path toward greater autonomy and potentially independence, he is not advocating for a referendum during this parliamentary session.
