Why I stepped down from ITU Deputy Secretary-General race – Nigerian minister, Tijani
Nigerian Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani has announced his withdrawal from the race for Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
In a statement posted on his LinkedIn page, Tijani explained that his decision was made after “careful consideration,” allowing him to concentrate on the transformative agenda set forth by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Tijani emphasized that stepping back from the ITU position would enable him to better focus on the responsibilities assigned to him by the President, particularly those aimed at advancing Nigeria’s digital economy.
“After careful consideration, I have decided not to pursue the opportunity to contest for the position of Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union,” he stated. He acknowledged that the role was an attractive opportunity for both himself and Nigeria, noting that it would have marked the first time a Nigerian served as an elected official within the ITU’s 160-year history.
“My focus will therefore remain on supporting President Tinubu’s transformative digital economy agenda and ensuring that these critical programmes deliver enduring value for the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Tijani added.
