Why ‘Things Fall Apart’ is greatest African book – Pete Edochie

Nollywood Veteran Pete Edochie Names “Things Fall Apart” as Greatest African Book

Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie recently labeled Chinua Achebe’s 1958 novel, “Things Fall Apart,” as the greatest African book ever written.

In an interview with TV3, Edochie emphasized that the novel holds significant importance because it authentically tells the African story. He suggested that if the book had focused on the perspective of colonizers, it would not have achieved the same level of acclaim.

Edochie acknowledged the contributions of other African authors who have sought to share African narratives since the publication of “Things Fall Apart,” yet he asserted that none have matched its strength.

“The reason why ‘Things Fall Apart’ is the greatest book ever written on the African continent is because it is telling our own story,” he said. “If it had been telling the story of the White man, it wouldn’t be that popular. Many others have made efforts since then but not as strong as ‘Things Fall Apart.'”

He encouraged contemporary African writers and creatives to focus on their unique narratives, arguing that this approach would enhance their impact on the global stage.

Edochie expressed concern that many Africans are diminishing their own talents by adopting foreign influences. He recounted a personal experience, noting that he was once often compared to American icons Elvis Presley and John Wayne. While he initially embraced those comparisons, Edochie ultimately chose to reclaim his cultural identity and now identifies with the name Uwadiegwu.

Edochie’s remarks underscore the importance of authentic representation in African literature and entertainment, suggesting that a stronger focus on homegrown stories could better showcase African creativity and heritage.
