2026 World Cup: Chelle reveals two matches that made Super Eagles fail to qualify
Super Eagles Coach Points to Key Matches in World Cup Qualification Failure
Nigeria’s Super Eagles missed the opportunity to compete in the 2026 World Cup, with head coach Eric Chelle identifying two crucial fixtures that contributed to the team’s downfall.
In an interview with journalist Riadh Belaïche, Chelle highlighted the significance of the matches against Zimbabwe, played both at home and away, as well as the away game against South Africa. The Eagles drew both encounters, which, according to Chelle, severely impacted their chances.
Additionally, Nigeria fell short in the African play-off final against the Democratic Republic of Congo, marking a second consecutive World Cup miss for the national team.
Chelle expressed regret over the draws, stating, “It’s true that in some matches, like against Zimbabwe, we drew at home while the match was in our hands. In the end, these two dropped points hurt us a lot. We also drew in South Africa.”
