2027: Jonathan to run on PDP platform

Former President Goodluck Jonathan to Pursue 2027 Presidential Bid on PDP Platform

Abuja — Former President Goodluck Jonathan is set to launch a bid for the presidency in the 2027 elections, utilizing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as his political platform, sources confirmed Sunday.

An official from Jonathan’s team disclosed that the decision to proceed with the PDP was reached after extensive discussions regarding his chances of returning to power during a time marked by widespread hardship and poverty in Nigeria.

Following the announcement, numerous groups have mobilized in an effort to secure the N100 million nomination form for Jonathan from the PDP. Many of these entities are actively competing to facilitate this process before the submission deadline on Tuesday.

Among the groups vying for the nomination form is a diaspora organization known as the Goodluckan Movement, which asserts its representation of Nigerians globally. The organization claims it is more representative than the competing northern factions.

Other notable groups pushing to obtain the nomination form include the Coalition for Jonathan, which has previously organized rallies supporting his candidacy, the Goodies Movement, an online support network, and The New Nigeria (TNN), a mass-based movement with a significant following in northern Nigeria. Additional entities include the Almajiri Network, Arewa for Good Governance, and several other northern youth coalitions.

Each group has reportedly committed to raising the required funds to secure the form for Jonathan.

While Jonathan has expressed intentions to consult widely following the encouragement from his supporters, sources indicate he has made a definitive decision to run. His supporters believe he can effectively address economic challenges in the country.

Dr. Tom Ohikere, a leader within the support network, has advised Jonathan to quickly select a party affiliation and secure a nomination form for the upcoming elections.

Amid speculation about which party Jonathan would align with, the PDP confirmed in a statement that he has met the necessary conditions to represent the party. PDP spokesman Barrister Ini Ememobong stated that Jonathan completed his online registration earlier this year, dismissing rumors regarding his political affiliations.

In a notable context, the former president was the recipient of a similar N100 million nomination form from a northern almajiri group in 2022, which he ultimately disavowed, and the form was not submitted.

In a further indication of his intent to contest, Jonathan has approached a Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge a legal claim that seeks to bar him from running on the grounds that he has already served two terms. The outcome of this case could significantly impact his potential candidacy against the current president.
