2027: Umrah won’t guarantee Tinubu second term — Phrank Shaibu

By Adegboyega Adeleye

Phrank Shaibu, the Director of Strategic Communication for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council, has dismissed the notion that President Bola Tinubu’s recent pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia for Umrah will contribute to his re-election bid in 2027.

In a statement made during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” Shaibu criticized the spiritual journey, asserting that securing a second term in office cannot be achieved through religious practices. He emphasized that such visits should be personal affairs, not politicized events.

Shaibu further questioned the sincerity of the President’s faith, arguing that if Tinubu were genuinely devoted, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai would not be facing legal troubles. He expressed concern that while the President spoke publicly in Saudi Arabia, many Nigerians were enduring economic hardships.

“The administration’s claims of economic improvement contrast sharply with the realities faced by the populace,” Shaibu stated, noting that citizens continue to grapple with soaring prices for basic necessities.

When asked if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would have joined Tinubu in Saudi Arabia if invited, Shaibu recalled that Atiku had sponsored the President’s earlier pilgrimage to Mecca.

Shaibu expressed confidence in Atiku’s prospects for the 2027 presidential election, particularly in northern states, stating that the former vice president is “home and dry” in that region.

Tinubu departed Abuja for Makkah on October 29, seeking divine guidance and blessings for Nigeria and its citizens. After completing the religious rites, he characterized the pilgrimage as a spiritual milestone and an opportunity for intercession on behalf of the country.

Upon his return, Tinubu shared that he prayed for wisdom and resilience to continue his leadership. “I asked for wisdom and resilience to continue to serve the people. I know that has been granted,” he remarked.

The President reflected on his previous pilgrimage before the 2023 election, noting that he had returned to express gratitude for having his earlier prayers answered. “Prior to the 2023 election, I did the same thing. I asked Allah to bless my Umrah then, and he did,” he said.

Tinubu reaffirmed his belief in divine favor, stating, “I have faith in that and believe extremely well that he has done me a favor to be the President of this great country.”
