Women in Politics: Nigeria’s political structure not built for women —  Adeola Azeez

By Ebunoluwa Sessou

As Nigeria approaches its next general election in 2027, the participation of women in politics and their access to elected offices remains a critical topic of discussion.

Recently, Adeola Azeez, the daughter of the late Afenifere leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo and a founding member of Women in Management, Business & Public Service (WIMBIZ), was declared the winner of the Ijebu Central Federal Constituency primary election for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ogun State. Azeez, who also served as the former Deputy Country Representative for Nigeria at Deutsche Bank, spoke candidly about her experiences running for the House of Representatives, the challenges she faced in securing a party ticket, and her commitment to contesting again in 2027.

In a recent interview, Azeez discussed the support that women in elected positions should offer aspiring female politicians and the importance of resilience in overcoming the barriers to political participation.

Background and Motivation

Upon retiring in 2020, Azeez transitioned from the corporate sector to politics—an ambition she had nurtured since 2013. She contested for the House of Representatives in 2023, approaching the election with the seriousness and preparation that she deemed necessary for any candidate.

Challenges in the Political Landscape

Azeez acknowledged the well-documented challenges women face in politics, including political violence and limited access to funding. However, she noted that her corporate experience had equipped her with a robust network of supporters, alleviating some financial pressures.

Despite this, she highlighted that the main obstacle was the political structure itself, which she believes is not designed to accommodate women adequately. Azeez expressed disappointment at not securing her party’s ticket in 2023, attributing this setback to the entrenched dynamics within political parties and the individuals who control them.

Ethical Considerations in Campaigning

Azeez stated her determination to avoid engaging in money politics or vote-buying, as she felt that compromising her values would betray her supporters. She emphasized the importance of a campaign built on integrity and engagement with constituents.

Reflections on Gender Discrimination

The political environment, Azeez contended, creates significant barriers for women, and holding qualifications does not guarantee a path to candidacy. She called for a reevaluation of the systemic hurdles that stifle women’s political engagement and urged the need for systems that recognize competence and allow for meaningful competition.

Plans for Future Elections

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Azeez is preparing to contest again, this time on a different party platform. She believes that her previous campaign has established a rapport with her constituency, strengthening her resolve for the next election.

Community Initiatives

Beyond her political aspirations, Azeez remains active in her community, facilitating projects such as a technology hub and a back-to-school initiative, funded through partnerships. She stresses that leadership is about impact, regardless of holding an elected office.

Supporting Aspiring Female Politicians

Amid criticisms that some women in office do not adequately support aspiring female politicians, Azeez affirmed the need for those with influence to create pathways for others. She called for greater collaboration and mentorship among women in politics.

Recommendations for Political Parties

Political parties must address structural barriers preventing women’s advancement, according to Azeez. She advocates for stronger networks that enable women to support one another and emphasizes the importance of recognizing women’s leadership capabilities.

Encouragement to Women in Politics

To women discouraged by the political landscape, Azeez urges perseverance and advocacy. Despite existing challenges, she sees a growing commitment among women to contribute to national development, highlighting the need for collective action to dismantle barriers within the political system.

Azeez remains dedicated to enhancing women’s representation in politics, believing in the necessity of continued efforts toward securing their rightful place in leadership.
