PORT HARCOURT—Two key allies of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, have emerged as candidates for the governorship of Rivers State in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Alabo Dakorinama George-Kelly is expected to run under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while Kingsley Chinda will represent the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Sources indicate that leadership within the Rainbow Coalition has advised both candidates to secure their gubernatorial forms. Following George-Kelly’s announcement of his candidacy, stakeholders across Rivers State expressed enthusiasm, viewing Wike’s endorsement as pivotal for the APC primary elections.

George-Kelly’s background as a political ally of Wike and a loyal member of the coalition has bolstered his support. Many believe his candidacy aligns with the widespread sentiment that a representative from the Kalabari Ijaw ethnic group should succeed current Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

George-Kelly previously contested the PDP gubernatorial primary in 2022, finishing second to Fubara. He was also appointed Director-General of the Border Communities Development Agency by President Bola Tinubu.

While no official confirmation has been released, an anonymous source within the Rainbow Coalition alleged that George-Kelly has already acquired his nomination form. Additionally, the source suggested that Chinda’s candidacy remains a consideration.

“This is where this game gets interesting,” the source stated. “The coalition’s leaders are seasoned strategists and have taken note of public reactions surrounding Chinda’s name. Some have perceived his candidacy as self-serving, particularly since he hails from Obio-Akpor, which has caused some controversy.”

In contrast, George-Kelly’s candidacy has garnered widespread approval. “The announcement of George-Kelly has excited stakeholders, especially among the youth,” the source added. “Wike is evaluating both candidates and considering their appeal to various factions, including supporters of Governor Fubara.”

Ultimately, the goal remains clear: to present a candidate who resonates with the electorate, emphasizing personal appeal over ethnic considerations. George-Kelly’s ability to connect with voters appears to position him favorably as the campaign unfolds.
