Manchester United beat Chelsea as Cunha strike boosts Champions League hope | Football News

Manchester United Secures Third in Premier League with Narrow Win Over Chelsea

Published April 18, 2026

Manchester United strengthened their hold on third place in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea, marking a significant step toward a return to the Champions League after a two-year absence. Matheus Cunha scored the only goal of the match in the first half.

The win on Saturday widened the gap between United and sixth-placed Chelsea to 10 points, with just 15 points remaining in the season. The top five teams in the league qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Chelsea’s loss, their fourth consecutive in league play, has severely undermined their aspirations of returning to Europe’s elite. The defeat also increases pressure on manager Liam Rosenior, who is only three months into his tenure.

The Stamford Bridge side struggled to capitalize on their chances, particularly without their top scorer, Joao Pedro, who is sidelined due to injury. Liam Delap, a former target for United, was unable to make an impact up front.

Rosenior welcomed back Enzo Fernandez, who had previously served a two-game disciplinary suspension for comments suggesting interest in a summer transfer to Real Madrid. Fernandez nearly opened the scoring but his effort narrowly missed the target.

United’s manager, Michael Carrick, faced challenges in assembling his defense, featuring three full-backs and 19-year-old Ayden Heaven due to injuries and suspensions among key players. Despite this, the makeshift defense held firm, bolstering Carrick’s case to remain at the helm beyond this season.

After a lackluster 2-1 defeat to Leeds earlier in the week, United showed improved form. Cunha’s decisive goal came in the 43rd minute, assisted by Bruno Fernandes, who recorded his 18th assist of the season.

Chelsea did display some urgency in the second half but failed to find the back of the net. Delap’s header struck the woodwork, and Noussair Mazraoui deflected a dangerous cross onto his own bar under pressure from Wesley Fofana. Moises Caicedo, who recently signed a seven-year contract, also came close to equalizing.

As the final whistle blew, the match concluded amidst a chorus of boos from the home crowd, as Chelsea faces a challenging road ahead, seemingly resigned to competing in the Europa League next season.
