Lagos Govt raises concerns over environmental violations in Ikeja GRA

Lagos State Government Calls for Stricter Enforcement of Environmental Regulations in Ikeja
The Lagos State Government has expressed concern regarding increasing environmental violations in the Ikeja Government Reserved Area (GRA). Officials are urging for stricter enforcement of existing regulations to address the issue.
This update was shared through a statement from Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources. Wahab recently held a meeting with leaders of the Ikeja GRA Residents Association, including its chairman, Muiz Banire, to discuss the situation and explore potential solutions.
According to the commissioner, the area has seen a troubling rise in environmental infractions, such as unauthorized street trading, noise pollution, inadequate waste management, and the conversion of residential properties for commercial use. Wahab emphasized the need for decisive action, stating, “These infractions pose serious environmental and security risks that must be addressed.”
He highlighted the importance of strictly enforcing current environmental laws related to waste management, noise control, and adherence to approved urban plans. Failure to do so, he warned, could undermine environmental governance in the state.
Banire assured officials of the residents’ association’s commitment to supporting enforcement efforts and fostering compliance within the community.
The meeting also included senior officials from the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.
