Jigawa approves N353m for flood preparedness ahead of 2026 rainy season

Jigawa State Government Allocates N353 Million for Rainy Season Preparations
The Jigawa State Government has initiated early preparations for the 2026 rainy season by approving N353 million for emergency response equipment, according to Alhaji Hannafi Yakubu, Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency.
During a briefing for journalists, Yakubu outlined the details of the state’s readiness for the upcoming rainy season. The approved equipment package includes 20 motorized boats, as well as essential relief materials and life-saving gear. These measures aim to mitigate the impact of anticipated flooding in vulnerable communities throughout the state.
Yakubu noted that the proactive steps come in response to early warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which has forecast severe flooding in 11 local government areas while also predicting dry spells in other regions.
The funding will be used to acquire crucial emergency response tools, thereby enhancing the state’s ability to respond swiftly during disasters. Additionally, renovations have been approved for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps to ensure they can adequately house residents who may be displaced by flooding.
The executive secretary highlighted that the 11 local government areas identified as high-risk are under close surveillance, and relevant agencies have begun implementing preventive measures to minimize potential loss of life and property. To aid in disaster response, 11 trucks loaded with food and non-food relief materials have been positioned for immediate distribution to affected areas in the event of flooding.
Yakubu urged residents, particularly those living in flood-prone regions, to take proactive measures such as clearing blocked drainage channels, avoiding the construction of structures on waterways, and cooperating with emergency officials to prevent avoidable disasters.
