Osun: Police probe alleged N22.3m farmer grant fraud scheme
The Osun State Police Command has launched an investigation into allegations of fraud involving a scheme that reportedly involved obtaining money under false pretenses. This follows a formal complaint submitted to the Commissioner of Police.
In a statement released Monday, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, on behalf of Commissioner Ibrahim Zungura, identified the suspect as 49-year-old Benjamin Segun Bright.
According to preliminary findings, Bright introduced a program called the Farmer and Consumers Initiative in May 2026. He allegedly claimed that he was working with certain philanthropists to provide selected farmer groups with grants reaching up to ₦3 million each.
Participants in the program were required to pay a registration fee of ₦5,000 and to recruit two additional individuals who would also need to pay the same fee. The initiative promised an initial payment of ₦50,000 after the first week, with subsequent payments of ₦100,000 and ₦200,000 until the total grant of ₦3 million was realized.
Reports indicate that nearly 4,000 individuals registered for the program and met the requirements set forth. Complainants allege that a total of ₦22,329,050 was paid to Bright related to the initiative.
Concerns regarding the authenticity of the program prompted the complainants to seek police intervention. The investigation has also revealed Bright’s involvement in the production and distribution of various herbal and chemical products, including Reumax Syrup, Kaye Bitters, and other herbal remedies.
The police are examining whether these products comply with government regulations, and the case has been referred to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for further action.
Commissioner Zungura urged the public to exercise caution and thoroughly verify grant and investment programs before registering or making financial commitments. He noted that the investigation is ongoing and appropriate legal actions will be determined once all processes are completed.
