Lagos Targets Flood Prevention, Orders Swift Clearance of Sanitation Waste

Lagos State Initiates Waste Clearance Following Monthly Sanitation Exercise

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State government has ordered operational teams to swiftly remove all waste generated during Saturday’s reinstated monthly environmental sanitation exercise. In a statement issued Sunday on the social media platform X, Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining clear drainage systems, unclogging roadsides, and preventing illegal dumping in canals.

Wahab indicated that he is receiving hourly updates from field teams engaged in the cleanup. He underscored the importance of sustaining the same mobilization efforts used to engage residents in the sanitation initiative for efficient waste removal.

“Every single waste generated during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise will be cleared in record time,” he stated. “I am receiving updates confirming that our Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) teams, along with private sector partners and local councils, are actively removing waste from the streets.”

The commissioner reiterated that maintaining a clean environment is crucial for mitigating flooding and other environmental issues. “The core objective of this exercise is to ensure that drainage channels are free, roadsides are unclogged, and canals are protected from illegal dumping,” Wahab said.

He highlighted the simultaneous clearing of drains as a key strategy to safeguard the city during the intensifying rainy season, asserting that a clean environment serves as the first line of defense against flooding.

Wahab reassured residents of the state government’s ongoing commitment to promoting cleanliness and responsible waste disposal. “We are determined to achieve a flood-free Lagos,” he said. “This goal is attainable if we maintain a culture of cleanliness and responsible environmental practices year-round. I appreciate every Lagosian who participated in this initiative. Together, we will strive for a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.”
