Killing of teacher sparks outrage in Sokoto, as community demands justice

Minanata Community Mourns Volunteer Teacher Following Fatal Stabbing
SOKOTO, Nigeria — Tension and grief have enveloped the Minanata community in the Sokoto South Local Government Area after the fatal stabbing of 15-year-old volunteer teacher Malam Usman Halilu.
During a joint news conference on Wednesday, residents, civil society groups, and other stakeholders expressed their outrage over the incident. The Minanata Community and the Minanata Future Association condemned the killing as a senseless act and called for justice.
Maccido Mohammad, a postgraduate student at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, alleged that the suspect, Mansur Arzika, had a prior conflict with Halilu. He claimed that this disagreement originated from a previous incident in which Halilu had identified Arzika as involved in a theft.
According to Mohammad, Halilu was attacked while returning home and was reportedly stabbed multiple times, despite efforts to flee the assailant.
The incident has raised alarm regarding safety in the community, prompting leaders to urge the Sokoto State Government and security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the prosecution of those responsible.
Ibrahim Muhammad, a legal practitioner, stated his commitment to pursuing the case, asserting that justice must be served.
Halilu was remembered as a dedicated volunteer teacher who taught in local schools throughout the Sokoto metropolis. Community members remarked that his death has created a significant void, highlighting his contributions to educating younger students.
They cautioned that a failure to address the situation decisively could undermine public confidence and potentially encourage further acts of violence.
