‘In Nigeria, you’re your own government’ – Korra Obidi

Korra Obidi Discusses Life in Nigeria on One 54 Podcast
Korra Obidi, a Nigerian dancer and singer based in the United States, recently shared her perspectives on life in Nigeria during an episode of the One 54 podcast.
Obidi remarked that Nigerian citizens often take on the role of their own governance, attributing this self-reliance to a lack of adequate governmental support. She noted that while Nigeria possesses significant potential, issues related to governance hinder its progress.
“Nigeria is blessed. It has no natural disasters,” Obidi stated. “They have been predicting that the sea would flood Lagos, but instead, the sea is constantly being pushed back, and people are building on the reclaimed land. Lagos is growing at an astronomical rate.”
Highlighting the country’s demographic, she mentioned that out of an estimated 300 million people in Nigeria, the majority are youths, which she sees as a source of potential. “Tech is going crazy there. It is the government that is hindering a lot. Most people no longer care about the government,” she said.
Obidi elaborated on the everyday realities for many Nigerians, saying, “In Nigeria, you’re your own government. You make your own water, dig wells, and purify water for yourself and your community. You get your own electricity, whether from solar sources or generators. You basically have your own ministry. Everybody has their own kingdoms and is just trying to survive.”
