Lagos seals over 12 buildings for breaching elevator safety rules

Lagos State Government Seals Properties for Elevator Safety Violations

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has sealed more than 12 properties for noncompliance with elevator safety regulations. This enforcement action was conducted by the Lagos State Safety Commission during a recent compliance initiative across various locations, including Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ikeja.

Director General of the commission, Lanre Mojola, stated that the buildings were sealed due to their failure to register elevators, conduct routine maintenance, and secure certified safety inspections.

Mojola emphasized that this exercise, which occurred in early May 2026, is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and prevent accidents in both residential and commercial buildings. He warned property owners to adhere to the state’s safety guidelines to avoid stricter penalties. The commission plans to maintain regular monitoring of facilities throughout Lagos.

Residents are encouraged to report any faulty elevators and refrain from using lifts that exhibit signs of malfunction. The commission reiterated that safety remains a top priority for the state government.
