Akpabio not supposed to be Senate President, fight not yet over – Oshiomhole

Senator Oshiomhole Questions Legitimacy of Senate President Akpabio
Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole has raised concerns regarding the eligibility of Godswill Akpabio to serve as Senate President, citing the current Senate Standing Order. Oshiomhole made his remarks during an interview on Arise Television’s “Morning Show” on Tuesday.
Oshiomhole endorsed the position of Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, SAN, who advocates for an amendment to the Senate Standing Order, emphasizing that the matter remains unresolved.
“The current Senate President has served a four-year term, lost his re-election bid, and then returned as Senate President this term,” Oshiomhole said. “If you add his first term to his current term, he still has not served eight years. If eight years is the minimum requirement, Senator Akpabio does not qualify to preside because he has not met it.”
Oshiomhole suggested that if Akpabio assumed the role unintentionally, that error should be rectified. He also noted that the term “consecutively” effectively limits the Senate President’s duration in office to three years concerning seniority.
“These kinds of laws are what breed dictatorship in Africa,” Oshiomhole stated, underscoring the need for clarity in legislative rules.
