Fire Destroys 24 Shops in Ilorin’s Mandate Market
ILORIN, Kwara State — A fire outbreak in Mandate Market early Tuesday morning resulted in the destruction of at least 24 shops, according to the Kwara State Fire Service.
Spokesperson for the fire service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, confirmed that the fire began around 4:44 a.m. Preliminary investigations suggest that an electrical fault may have sparked the blaze.
The fire reportedly originated in a shop specializing in mobile phone accessories and charging services. It quickly spread to adjacent shops that contained food items and other merchandise.
Firefighters arrived promptly to quell the flames and prevent further damage within the market area.
In response to the disaster, Alabi Muhammed, Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, visited the market to offer condolences to the affected traders. He emphasized the importance of fire safety measures, urging business owners to install fire extinguishers and other protective equipment in their shops.
As of the time of this report, an official assessment of the total property losses has not yet been made.
