London Goalkeeper Named King of Tooro People in Uganda
George Kamurasi, a 36-year-old goalkeeper for the SE Dons, a non-league football club in London, has been selected as the next king of the Tooro people in Uganda. His appointment follows the passing of his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died at the age of 34 while undergoing cancer treatment.
Kamurasi, who plays in the ninth tier of English football, has been named to succeed King Oyo, who had ascended to the throne at just three years old in 1995. The Tooro Kingdom is currently navigating a transitional phase following the king’s death.
Known as “Big G,” Kamurasi is also the captain of SE Dons, which competes in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division in southeast London. He is recognized for his dynamic leadership style, often inspiring his teammates with fervent motivational talks.
Despite his new royal responsibilities, Kamurasi has expressed reservations about leaving London, where he lives with his wife and young son. His selection has elicited mixed responses in Uganda; while some appreciate his candid nature, others question the effectiveness of a monarch raised in the UK to authentically represent the Tooro people.
The funeral for King Oyo is scheduled for this weekend, and Kamurasi may be unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict with a cup match involving his club.
Kamurasi comes from a prominent royal lineage; his grandfather, King George Rukidi III, famously welcomed the late Queen Elizabeth during her visit to Uganda in 1954. He now faces a significant choice between continuing his football career in London and embracing his family’s royal duties in Uganda.
