Police Inspector General Urges Restraint in Recording Officers

The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has advised the public against recording police officers during their duties, labeling the behavior as demoralizing. Disu emphasized the importance of focus for law enforcement personnel to effectively carry out their responsibilities without distractions.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Disu referenced a recent Federal High Court ruling from Warri, Delta State, affirming citizens’ constitutional right to record police officers while they perform public duties. The court’s decision, handed down on March 17, 2026, ruled in favor of freedom of expression, stating that restricting individuals from filming police activity infringes upon their rights as outlined in Section 39 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.

However, Disu raised concerns over the implications of the ruling, questioning whether members of the public would accept similar scrutiny in their workplaces. He pointed out the potential embarrassment to officers when being recorded in various settings, including restaurants, while on duty.

“Some individuals approach officers with unsealed cameras, which can be troubling,” Disu stated. “We acknowledge the public’s right to document our activities, but we urge citizens to exercise restraint and avoid treating police officers as subjects for social media content.”

Disu highlighted that police officers often operate in high-risk environments, including rural areas and desolate highways, where their focus is critical to ensuring the safety of all. “Our officers work under challenging conditions, and they require complete concentration to fulfill their duties effectively,” he added.

The Inspector General’s remarks aim to strike a balance between public rights and the operational integrity of police work.
