Kano Assembly calls for urgent action over tomato pest outbreak

Kano Assembly Calls for Urgent Action Against Tomato Pest Infestation

The Kano State House of Assembly has called for immediate measures to address the infestation of Tuta absoluta, a pest that poses a significant threat to tomato farms across multiple local government areas.

The appeal was made on Wednesday by Ahmed Ibrahim, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources, during a presentation of the committee’s findings to fellow lawmakers. This assessment followed a motion of urgent public importance introduced by Ali Lawan Kiyawa, representative for Bagwai/Shanono, concerning the pest’s impact in his constituency.

Ibrahim reported that the Tuta absoluta pest has spread to several key tomato-producing communities, including Bagwai, Shanono, Rogo, Tofa, Bunkure, Kura, Garun Malam, Rano, Kibiya, as well as parts of Tudun Wada and Dawakin Kudu. He emphasized that the pest affects tomatoes at all growth stages, damaging leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits, leading to substantial losses for local farmers.

“The situation is serious and has wide implications. It is not only affecting farmers but also contributing to low tomato supply and rising prices across the country,” Ibrahim stated.

In response, the committee urged the state government to act swiftly by providing farmers with pesticides, spraying equipment, protective gear, and other essential inputs through the Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority. Additionally, the committee recommended deploying extension workers to farming communities and improving farmer training on pest management and monitoring of agrochemical products.

Lawmakers emphasized the necessity for prompt action to safeguard food production and minimize further losses in the affected areas.
