LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has apprehended 27 individuals suspected of vandalizing a newly constructed bridge that connects Festac Town to Alakija. The arrests occurred during a late-night enforcement operation, officials announced Friday.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, characterized the incident as a severe act of sabotage against public infrastructure. He stated that preliminary investigations revealed the suspects had removed essential structural materials from the bridge, including iron rods, steel reinforcements, and cables, jeopardizing its stability and safety.
“This criminal act poses a serious threat to public safety and undermines the government’s investment in critical infrastructure,” Wahab remarked.
The apprehension of the suspects was executed by the Rapid Response Squad in conjunction with the Kick Against Indiscipline task force. Wahab confirmed that the individuals would face prosecution under Lagos State law.
He further emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to protect public infrastructure, assuring that enforcement actions against vandalism and related criminal activities will continue.
“The Lagos State Government will take decisive action against individuals or groups engaged in acts that threaten the safety and well-being of residents,” he added.
